Attributes and Benefits

When companies are designing a product they try to come up with features and/or attributes to that will ultimately benefit the consumer as well as differentiate them from the rest of the market (Mukherjee & Hoyer, 2001). Fitbit did just that when it created the Fitbit Flex.

The design of the Fitbit Flex was focused on creating a slim, comfortable and lightweight wristband with a modern flare that is stylish enough to wear at all times. They opted to go with a display that is very minimalistic and extremely user friendly by using a simple string of LED lights as message indicators. These lights represent how far the consumer is from reaching their daily goals as well as provides them with immediate feedback on their overall progress. One of the benefits of this minimal display is that it allows a very impressive battery life that generally lasts for five days once completely charged. Fitbit also wanted to make the Flex tracker flexible enough to match their consumers’ personalities and moods. They did this by cleverly making the bands interchangeable and offering in a variety of colors for consumers to choose from (Fitbit Flex, 2013).

Fitbit didn’t stop there. They wanted to make things even easier for the consumer. “Flex automatically syncs your data to PCs, Macs, iPhone 4S and 5, iPad 3, Retina & mini, iPod touch, and to select Android phones without plugging in or pushing buttons” (Fitbit Flex, 2013, para. 5). They do this through the wireless sync and Bluetooth 4.0 functions. In fact, Fitbit was the first company to even offer an app that worked with Android products as well as the only one to offer the capability Bluetooth 4.0 for Apple devices (“Fitbit; Fitbit offers,” 2013).
