INTRODUCTION
Alex Sander, 32, is a product manager in the toiletries division of Landon Care Products Inc. a cosmetics company headquartered in Connecticut. Landon Care has recently been acquired by Avant-Garde, a European beauty company and Alex has been assigned the responsibility for the U.S. launch of Nourish an Avant-Garde product.
The case starts with a conversation between Alex and his neighbor , and goes on to reflect upon his interactions with his subordinate, Betsy Garrison; an old employee of Landon Care, his associate; Leong dawdled and his boss; Sam Glass, the Product Group Supervisor, during the course of the day.
Alex is getting his first 360 degree review, which is being conducted by his firm for the first time. He does not give much importance to it because he believes that, compensation is the only measure of performance .His style of work & his peer interaction as elaborated in the case portrays him as a rigid high achiever who uses temper, as a management tool. Although he is self-motivated, intellectual and knows what to do and when to do still his efforts are directed towards achieving economic goals while ignoring, the effects of his actions on other members of his team. Further the results of the performance review also indicate that he has traits of both, a narcissist and a machiavellist.
First read of the case suggests that it is about Alex Sander’s style of work and the challenge it poses to his seniors & subordinates in the organization. But as we read further and analyze, we note how various instances in just one day of Alex’s life depicts the following:
• How our personalities influence our behavior in an organization.
• How performance review exercises can help an organization in identifying the personality traits of their employees for further training & development.
• How important self-evaluation is, to be effective and not just successful
