As we know, three-fourths of the world is actually water, Port Terminals has played a

vital role by being a point of interchange, Transfer, and conversion for goods to be

delivered through Maritime Transportation.

Although Port Terminals are point of interchange of the same modal system that ensures

the continuity of work flow, it cannot be considered as merely as a maritime terminal as

it also acts as a land terminal. For instance, trucks brings freight to rail terminals, rails

then bring these freights to docks to be loaded onto ships. This cuts down the time

needed for the freight to reach from point "A" to point "B" and thus it contributes to

Maritime Transportation. One of the main factor of transport terminals be it

international or reginal is that convergence function between two or more domains.

Port Terminals are made mainly to connect with ships and therefore its location has

always been historically one of the most important factor. In the olden days, ships

were the best means of transporting freight therefore it was best for the ports to be

strategically located at the head of water navigation, the most upstream site. Port

Terminals handle largest volume of freight out of all other terminals put together.

Having said that, it is very important for the port to have facilities to cater convergence

of both on-ship and in-land activites. Taking into account the operational characteristics

of maritime transportation, the location of ports is constrained to a limited array of sites,

mostly defined by geography. Most ports, especially those that are ancient, owe their

initial emergence to their site as the great majority of harbours are taking advantage of

natural coastline or natural site along a river.

One such port is Port of Singapore Authority(PSA). It was formed on 1st of April 1964 to

take over the functions, assets and liabilities of the Singapore Harbour Board.

Singapore's port can be considered as a very...
