In the early years when the AIDS epidemic first came to America the targeted population were gay white men and intravenous drug users were the groups with the highest risk of HIV and AIDS infection. Today the targeted population is heterosexual African Americans, Hispanic, and Latino groups that are at the highest risk. The African American account for about 47% of the new AIDS diagnoses each year and about 30% patients are females. Since the beginning of AIDS and HIV in America has went from gay white men to heterosexual being the targeted population in the United States today (ID advisor, 2013).

There are about 1.1 million people in the United States that have HIV/AIDS and about 18% of those people do not know they are infected. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates about 1,148,200 people ages 13 and up are living with HIV/AIDS this includes the 207,600 people who are unaware of their infection. Today the HIV/AIDS incidence is remaining stable at about 50,000 new cases per year. Still today gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) of all races and ethnicities are most affected by HIV/AIDS, in 2010 MSM accounted for about 78% of new HIV/AIDS infections with males. Women account for about 20%, heterosexual about 25% and about 8% injection drug users. African Americans still continue to have the most severe burden of HIV/AIDS (CDC, April 23, 2013).

Although the numbers of new cases have dropped, there are still many new cases each year and many people who are living with HIV/AIDS so the general impact that changing demographics have on the health care market still grow. There are still people needing treatments, medications, and check-ups to manage living with HIV/AIDS. Although there is no known cure for HIV/AIDS, people with HIV/AIDS are living longer normal lives because of the medications and treatment they have out for HIV/AIDS.
