Introduction to Criminal Justice

Unit # 1

1. I would have to say that the criminal justice system responded to crime in a way that is acceptable to society. The first stages of the system’s response to crime are that when a crime is committed, they first call the police. Which an officer or officer shall respond and take the initial report. The next step would be to find out how many witnesses or if there are any witnesses and gather statements from them. The next step would be to investigate the crime. If there is probable cause to arrest then an arrest warrant would be obtained or subject arrested on the spot. Once an arrest is made, in felony cases there would be a preliminary hearing if the defendant should choose so. If the defendant chooses not to have a preliminary hearing than it would be waived to a grand jury to find probable cause for trial which is mentioned as "True Bill" or not enough evidence which consist of a "No bill" then comes trial and after trial comes sentencing.

2. When talking about how some of the potential affects that the media can present on overall crime is what we are seeing in the media right now. I'm speaking about the recent shooting in Aurora, Co. The media is talking about gun laws and some of the media is speaking about how we need tougher gun laws etc. My opinion is that the media may be questioning the legality of guns and if the government should outlaw them. But remember, criminals already have guns illegally, so taking them away from the law abiding people only gives criminals the advantage. ONE person in that theatre with a concealed weapon and minimal training could've taken this guy out or at least threw a kink in his plans. The media is only going to betray the criminal justice for ratings. They are going to tell the public what will get their attention and to keep the tuned in.
