Intro letter

Dear Reader,

I wrote this paper to persuade people to think about nature and it’s effects on our children. Another reason I wrote this paper was to inform the reader about the effects that the modern world is having on the nature around us.

I am particularly proud of my section on logging and if I had more time I would work on my transitions from one topic to another.

I have a deep connection with the outdoors and I believe that the connection with the outdoors is being lost. I would hope that this essay will help reverse this growing trend of a de-natured childhood. If I am able to change at least one persons view on nature then I have accomplished what I set out to do.

Intro

What has childhood turned into in the last thirty years? What changes have been made around us that are affecting our ability to give our children the things they need? These are the issues that Richard Louv addresses in his latest book Last Child in the Woods. He not only investigates the causes of these changes but he very clearly states the effects. The effects our children are facing are, obesity, Attention Deficit Hyperactive disorder (ADHD) which also causes them to having trouble in school and over all just becoming less active. Louv is investigating what might be causing this change in children. Last Child in the Woods is a written explanation of his findings. In Last Child in the Woods Richard louv is addressing a disorder that he has named Nature-Deficit Disorder. “--So, for now, let’s call the phenomenon nature-deficit disorder . . . I hesitate to introduce this term” (Louv pg36). Louv believes that children’s retreat from nature has caused the changes between children now and children thirty years ago. Many things are causing this retreat including urbanization, declining economy and technical advances.
