SCOTTS MIRACLE-GRO CASE

Bob Barwcombe has been challenged to justify whether to outsource to production of Scotts Miracle-Gro (Scotts) spreaders to China. There are a number of risks Scotts face from outsourcing production of the Temecula plant to a contract manufacturer in China.

While there is no metric to measure worker morale, the correlation can be made that morale impacts productivity and quality. Morale costs could also impact other functional areas of the company. Moreover, quality can be sacrificed when control is no longer an in-house function.

They also risk external failure costs if there is a decrease in the quality of spreaders being produced.
