Historical Survey of the Internet

In 1957, the first artificial earth satellite, Sputnik, was launched by USSR. The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in subsequent year was commissioned under the US the Department of Defense (DoD). ARPA was to ensure US sophistication in science and technology particular to the military operations. In 1962, the military computer technology use had to be improved through ARPA's research. Interactive computer use was envisioned. ARPANET shifted basis from the private sector to universities hence quicker technological expansions.

The first logins at UCLA

In 1969, BBN produced an Interface Message Processor (IMP) to UCLA that when powered, it immediately executed. The scholars anticipated that they could log onto the UCLA computer and try to send it some data (Malik 54). The idea of login was cultivated at this stage.

First public demonstration of ARPNET

By 1971, ARPANET had 15 nodes and 23 hosts. Message communication was enabled through an Email program that was invented and was able to send data over distributed connections. In July 1972, one was capable of listing, reading randomly, documenting, sending and reacting to email messages. In October, ARPANET was demonstrated between 40 machines and the Terminal Interface Processor (TIP) in International Conference on Computer Communications (ICCC) at the Washington D.C. The first computer-to-computer chat took place at UCLA, and was redone during ICCC. By 1973, ARPANET with users estimated at 2,000. A commercial version of ARPANET, Telenet, was launched. It was the first public packet data service. Satellite links cross two oceans (to Hawaii and UK) were completed as the first TCP tests are run over them. In 1979, a meeting was held to define a Computer Science Department research computer network. USENET was then established.

BITNET and CSNET

In 1981, BITNET, "Because It's Time NETwork", began as a joint system at the City University of New York, with the...
