Future of ERP Systems

While vacationing on a secluded island in the Bahamas, your CEO came across Jeff Bezos who argued that ERP systems were irrelevant in today’s world of SOA, SaaS, and cloud-based systems. Your organization, a large Fortune 500 manufacturer, has already invested heavily on ERP systems and is considered as a top ERP shop. It is often used as a reference by the ERP vendors and practitioner journals as an exemplar of well-run IT organization.

After returning from the vacation, the CEO asked the CIO to share her opinion about the future of ERP systems in the organization during the next board meeting. The CIO has sent you a note asking you to create a briefing document to help her in this regard. As a freshly minted information systems graduate from a leading business school, your CIO expects you to be on top of the current technology trends and requires you to offer specific recommendations supported by relevant evidence.

Here’s an excerpt from the e-mail that you received from the CIO:

“Is ERP on its deathbed? SOA and SaaS technologies present new technological models that challenge the monolithic architecture of an ERP system. Are ERP systems becoming big unwieldy legacy systems? Should we be exploring alternate technology to ensure that we do not get stuck with obsolete technology in the future. Don’t tell me things that I already know.”
