Part I: Origins of Psychology

Within the discipline of psychology, there are several perspectives used to describe, predict, and explain human behavior. The seven major perspectives in modern psychology are psychoanalytic, behaviorist, humanist, cognitive, neuroscientific/biopsychological, evolutionary, and sociocultural. Describe the seven major psychological perspectives using two to three sentences each. Select one major figure associated with one of the seven major perspectives and describe his or her work in two to three sentences. Type your response in the space below.

Psychoanalytic—The focus and exploration of unconscious behaviors. Psychiatric treatment originated by Sigmund Freud.

Behaviorist—The study of observable and quantifiable aspects of behavior. B.F. Skinner innovated his own philosophy of science called radical behaviorism.

Humanist—A group of philosophies and ethicl perspectives which emphasize the value and welfare of human beings. A believer that humans can do as they please

Cognitive—Pertaining to the act or process of knowing, perceiving, or remembering. It could be a comparison of text with experiences.

Neuroscientific/Biopsychological—Examined behavior through genetics/ brain and other parts of the nervous system. The way biological processes relate to behavioral and mental processes.

Evolutionary—Approach in the social and natural sciences that examine psychological traits. Gradual process in which something changes into a more complex or better form.

Sociocultural—The interaction of social and cultural elements. Sociocultural theory grew from the work of Lev Vygotsky.
