Fat free food figures are too good to be true based on the industries weights and standards. I do not always eat the healthiest and being in the Army I am on the go a lot so I try to select foods that are fat free or at least that’s what the labels say. This assignment has shown me that I need to look a little bit more carefully with what I chose to consume. I have chose three prepackaged foods one from breakfast, lunch and dinner to determine their percentage of fat and protein calories.
BREAKFAST- QUAKER MAPLE & BROWN SUGAR INSTANT OATMEAL PACKET
GRAMS OF FAT- 3g
GRAMS OF PROTEIN- 4g
TOTAL CALORIES- 160
FAT CONTENT
3 X 9 = 27
27/160 X 100 = 16.87
16.87% CALORIES FROM FAT
PROTEIN CONTENT
4 X 4 = 16
16/160 X 100 = 10
10% CALORIES FROM PROTEIN
LUNCH- NISSIN CUP OF NOODLES
GRAMS OF FAT- 13g
GRAMS OF PROTEIN- 18g
TOTAL CALORIES- 300
FAT CONTENT
13 X 9 = 117
117/300 X 100 = 39
39% CALORIES FROM FAT
PROTEIN CONTENT
7 X 4 = 28
28/300 X 100 = 9.3
9.3% CALORIES FROM PROTEIN
DINNER- STARKIST CHUNKLIGHT TUNA
GRAMS OF FAT- .5g
GRAMS OF PROTEIN- 18g
TOTAL CALORIES- 80
FAT CONTENT
.5 X 9 = 4.5
4.5/80 X 100 = 5.625
5.625% CALORIES FROM FAT
PROTEIN CONTENT
18 X 4 = 72
72/80 X 100 = 90
90 % CALORIES FROM PROTEIN
Upon completion of this assignment I have noticed that you cannot trust what the labels say on so called “fat free” products. I think the best route to go when shopping is to steer away from prepackaged and processed foods all together and just buy all natural or organic foods. I have also learned that I need to stay away from the cup of noodles because they are horrible for me and really has no protein content. I also think the food industry needs to have someone who speaks out and tells the truth because their packages are misleading and are not as healthy...
