Racial Diversity in Society Worksheet

Part I

Complete the following using the MySocLab Social Explorer Map: Income Inequality by Race (located on the student website) as a reference:

• Select 1 racial group from the list below:

o African American

o Asian American

o Arab American

o Hispanic American/Latino

o White/Caucasian

• Write a 150- to 300-word summary of the economic, social, and political standings of that group. Use additional resources if necessary, from the University Library or your textbooks. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

The group I chose is Arab-Americans. Very little is publicized about this group of people which creates a lack of information. The lack of information coupled with our media generalizing Arabs by classifying Muslim Arabs in the Middle East and Arab-Americans as the same has caused problems for Arab-Americans. This has often left them in a defensive position where they had to explain their culture. Arab Americans are decedents of people from 22 different Arab countries that stretch from Africa to Asia. A lot of Arab-Americans immigrated to the United States to avoid the conflicts faced in their home countries. One interesting fact is that, according to the Arab American Institute, more that 60% of Arab-Americans are Christian. This is in contrast to most of the Arab world that are mostly Muslim. However, this is slowly changing because most of the Arabs who immigrate to the United States these days are Muslim.
