Poetry- I shall paint my nails red

Satyamurti expresses how she feels about her lifestyle in “I shall paint my nails red” The color red inflicts many different emotions and meanings. Each reason is different than the one after and I think that this is because Satayamurti is trying to show how red can inflict all of these different emotions and how different character or different people can fit into each role.

Throughout the poem there are four subjects and themes:

* Femininity

* Appearance

* Pride

* Stereotypes

These different ideas in the poem address what it means to be a modern woman: professional, strong, attractive, proud, a mother, a lover.

Satyamurti thinks a woman’s role is to look good and brighten her environment, she also tells us that she has self-respect (….becaise I am proud of my hands)

The second line says ‘because I am proud of my hands’ this shows self confidence, a model or maybe someone who is a model or vein. It could also show someone who has written many books and are proud of their hands. Red nail polish is also quite a flashy color nd easily noticeable on the hands of anyone and will definitely draw attention. On line 6 “ because my daughter will say ugh” this shows the point of view from a mother who is trying to please her daughter but knows that no matter what, her daughter won’t think she is cool. Each line is aimed out to a woman but the last line relates to all because it is reversible, there are a lot of things in life that are irreversible. It shows and tells everyone the each and every person is human and they are still able to make mistakes.

In the Title “ I shall paint my nails red” the word “shall” reveals a definite statement about her life. Later on throughout the poem there are other words such as “will”, “can”, “my” and “is” which also revel definite statements about her life.
