Text: The textbook for this course is Mishkin. Frederic S. The Economics of Money, Banking and Financial Markets. 9th Ed. Update, Addison Wesley.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class will explore the nature and functions of money and banking; relation of money and credit to the Federal Reserve System, and economic goals. During the course of the semester, economic tools and concepts will be developed to help students organize their thinking about financial markets, and about the role of key financial market participants.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES: After completing this course a student should know

* what the functions of money are,

* how interest rates are determined,

* how riskiness and maturity affect interest rates,

* what objectives central banks pursue and what type of instruments they use to reach their targets,

* how financial markets work in general and what happens when they do not work properly,

* what the targets of financial regulation are,

* what the general principles of bank management are

ATTENDANCE: Attendance WILL be taken on random days. You are allowed to miss one class. If you miss more than one class, you will lose THREE points of your final exam grade for EACH absence. In the case of absence, please call on your classmates for notes. If you come to class, you need to participate in the lectures and show respect for others by not disturbing anyone.
