A supply chain’s long standing image problems have at times blocked the true importance of the term and function. Within the supply chain you have those who tend to oversimplify the task by placing it as delivering goods from A to B, and with this those that have overlooked the important significance and meaning behind supply chain management. With market instability throughout the economies today, organizations and companies tend to look beyond cost advantage. Organizations are looking at quality and flexibility as the emphasis in order to meet the needs of their customers in any given market. The term customer comes with more importance than just the person who buys the finished product, as each company involved in the circle or supply chain is a customer in the loop. Without each customer linked to the other end in the supply chain, the supply chain would no longer be a supply chain and the products will become a thing of the past.
In today’s economy and market, whether it is retail or any consumer based product, the consumers are the one’s who rule. According to Barve (2011) the market is becoming impossible to remove and ignore sources of turbulence and volatility; therefore supply chain managers must accept uncertainty. If consumbers do not find what they want at a store they will find it down the street, in the mall, or even online. They will also find it at a price they are willing to pay. Today’s consumers are picky and diverse in their choices. Due to technological changes and advancements throughout our world over the last 20 years, consumers no longer come to the table unaware or uninformed regarding the products they are wanting to buy. In today’s times, consumers are armed with an abundant amount of information that allows them to demand their choices through a magnitude of multiple different products.
