Southwest Airlines originated in 1971 with only a handful of employees. Today the organization operates with a staff of over 30,000. Southwest was the first commercial airline to create a frequent flyer program, now an industry standard. From the beginning, Southwest has received numerous awards and is the only Airline recognized in the top 10 list of the World’s Most Admired Companies by Fortune Magazine.

The airlines success is largely associated to its focus on customer service and employee motivation policies. Southwest workers are highly motivated and the employee retention rate is 92.3% (Chan, August 2007. The reason for employee motivation is because of Southwest Airline’s method of management and organizational structure..

A brief history of the business:

Southwest Airlines have been around for almost 40 years; the original name was Air Southwest Company. After fighting legal battles the name was change to Southwest Air. When the airline first opened it was a small Texas airline, and today Southwest Air flies more than 100 million passengers a year to 66 different cities across the United States. Southwest Opened in 1971, 10 years later added its 22nd Boeing 737, and twenty years later focuses on corporate culture, and today is one of the strongest and most competitive airlines available to flying customers. Southwest employs nearly 35,000 employees. The cities they service are in 35 states; they operate with 53 Boeing 737 Jets.

Products and Services

Southwest has many products and services they offer to consumers. The main focus of theirs is their low cost no frills airfare. They also provide assistance with renting cars, hotels, and putting vacation packages together. Another main feature the airline is that they have adopted a Rapid Rewards program for frequent flyers.
