Exercise and Obesity

Today’s society is carried away with over eating and finding the quick and easy way to eat. Over the past 50 years “foods are more readily available and heavily advertised” (Knoop, 2010, p. 1). The use of technology is replacing exercise for your children. To keep the future from being filled with certain illnesses Americans need to start eating healthier, exercising, and getting children involved.

Today’s society Americans have very busy schedules and with the quick and easy fast food restaurants being more available therefore they are getting more and more business. For example, McDonald’s has three different sizes for their value meals. The have small, medium and large French fries, and soft drinks never so the summer of 2012 regulation requiring restaurant chains, have to post calorie information on their menu boards (Ferguson, 2012). Diets in today’s society have strayed away from the healthy, long-term diets that people use to follow. Now it is all about not eating, taking supplements, and losing the most weight in the least amount of time. If a diet involves popping pills or cutting out all carbohydrates, it should not be done. These diets are hard on the body and do not always work. Simple changes can prevent thousands of people from various heart problems, obesity, and cancers. America’s eating habits have changed greatly over the past century. Things like carbohydrates should not be excluded like a lot of diets infer. Increased intake of whole-grain foods has been related to a reduced risk of developing diabetes and heart disease (Liese, Roach, Sparks, Marquart, D’Agostino & Mayer-Davis, 2003). The popular Atkins and South Beach diets make people believe that the only way to lose weight is by not eating carbohydrates.
