There are many reasons why a company should secure its information and servers. Ensuring that all information remains confidential within the company is important. It would be a very bad thing if important information got into the wrong hands, an example being a competitor. Also, your servers need to be accessible whenever you need them, securing them can do this. A few years ago somebody hacked into GoDaddy.com’s servers and millions of clients were out of business, which gave them a bad name because people may now be scared of reliability issues or stolen data. Editing data is also very important, you want to make sure that the information you have is 100% accurate. If someone got into your database and changed information around it could potentially bring down a company and risk losing data accuracy. There are many ways and special tricks to secure servers and allow you to rest easy.
There are plenty of ways to keep your equipment safe, one way is disabling anonymous access to your server. You can set the server to only allow the network to access information; this won’t let any outsiders in. Allowing certain dates and times for users to access data can also come in handy. Let’s say you know that on the weekends and any day after 6:00pm, nobody will need to be accessing data, you can set it to only allow log-ins during specific times. Similar to only allowing access to the network, you can go a step further and set it to specific IP address. Setting strong password requirements is also important. There are common passwords that the general public uses, and that’s just too easy for someone trying to get on the network. This will make sure everyone has a safe password. Another thing to do is to have anti-virus or other security software. Especially after downloading software off the internet, you never know where the virus’ can be hiding.
