Lab 1: The Scientific Method

I will be posting the answer key under Study Groups, then Lab 1 - Answer Key after I have graded all the labs. You will gain access to the answer key and associated Lab 1 Discussion if you submit a complete lab on time.

Exercise 1:

1. Based on this information, what do you observe?

Based on the information provided in the table the pattern is that as the amount of dissolved oxygen increased the number of fish observed increases until it reached a plateau of about 12 ppm then after this point the fish observed starts to decrease.

2. Develop a hypothesis relating to the amount of dissolved oxygen measured in the water sample and the number of fish observed in the body of water.

My hypothesis would be the following: If you increase the amount of oxygen in the water, more fish will be observed.

3. What would your experimental approach be to test this hypothesis?

My experimental approach to this test would be to setup ten fish tanks that would have the amount of dissolved oxygen increased based on the table and in each of the tanks. Then to start off I would place one fish in each tank and increase the amount of fish at 10 hour intervals and then record my results of how many fish survive in each tank. The amount of water would be the same in each tank with the exact same setup...
