COMPULSORY ACTIVITY
For each situation below, identify the variable, its level of measurement and
indicate whether it is discrete or continuous. Also decide whether the statement is an application of descriptive statistics or inferential statistics.
* The administration of ABC University is proposing a change in student admission policy. A random sample of students was selected and each was asked if he/she favors or opposes the change. The result was used as basis for the administration’s admission policy.
* The guidance counselor of the College of Arts and Sciences recorded the IQ scores of entering freshmen of the college and reported an average IQ of 105.
* The temperature in degrees Celsius of a certain patient has steadily decreased after 1, 2 and 3 hours of administration of an antipyretic tablet. Hence, it is expected that the temperature will stabilize to the normal body temperature in the next few hours.
* A newspaper article reports the average salaries of appointed heads of national government offices from data collected on all national government offices.
* Sample data obtained from nationwide poll was used to estimate the chance of winning of a certain presidential candidate in the May 2004 elections.
Describing One’s Own Data Set
Bring to class any set of actual data that interests you. The data may be your test score in a particular subject, your daily expenses over a week period, the amount (in pesos) you spent for your cellular phone over a month, or the monthly electric bill of your family over a one-year period. Compute basic descriptive measures of central tendency and variability for your data. Based on the computed values of the descriptive measures, write a brief description and interpretation of the data. What are the implications of the result to real life?
