The objective of this paper is to analyze the conflict between the Miami School District and the parents of school-aged children attending these schools. An additional objective is to develop a plan to address stakeholders’ concerns. Finally, this paper will determine of the stakeholders’, how ethics and culture affects this determination, and what negotiation strategy used to support the school boards need to redrawn boundaries while addressing the concerns of the stakeholders’. I will start with a description of the conflict between the two parties.

The Miami School District has experienced an increase in enrollment. In response to the recent increase in enrollment, the Miami School District has decided to redraw school boundaries for the upcoming school year. To aide in the development of these new school boundaries the Miami School District has retained the services of experts to redraw the new school boundaries. Unfortunately, many students will not be able to stay at their current school under this new plan. The parents of the students are upset about the proposed plan. They are voicing their objections to the school board for reason concerning quality of education, increased travel time, crossing of economic and cultural boundaries, affect on property values, and the social effects on the children.

In analyzing the conflict between the school district and the parents of the students, it is clear that both parties will not be able to collaborate on the issues. The school district has to an obligation for the overall quality of education to its students. If the school district withdraws the plans due to the parents’ objections, the overcrowding of schools could affect the way the quality of education the children receive. It would be impossible to lower class sizes, force the cancellation of many arts and science classes, and limit space available for programs like special education.
