What is statistics?

-Statistics is a branch of mathematics that deals with the analysis and interpretation of numerical data in terms of samples and populations.

-Also defined as a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, organization, and analysis of numerical data and with such problems as experiment design and decision making.

2 TYPES OF STATISTICS

-Descriptive Statistics

      It deals with the collection and presentation of data and the summarizing values that describe the group's characteristics. The most common summarizing values are the measures of central tendency and variation. One can describe the performance of a class 40 students, for instance, using the mean score in a given examination in College Algebra. Suppose the mean score is 56 and the passing score is 45, then one can say that the majority of the students passed the test. If only 12 out of 60 students obtained scores above 455, then it mean that the exam is too difficult or the teaching strategy was not effective so either the teacher has to give a less difficult exam, or reteach the topic.
