What if you were living paycheck, to pay check, could you say that you have an nutritional lifestyle? I believe that poverty and obesity have an direct connection. They go hand in hand, because a person that is just trying to survive may not have the funds to eat healthier foods, lack in time to invest in healthy food practices, or is supported by the government and simply does not choose to spend the money on nutritional food. I feel that these are the main reasons why someone living in poverty may be obese.
Lacking in funds is a big reason why people aren’t eating healthier. The prices for organic vegetables and meats are sky high. When funds are low, you are just simply trying to get the biggest bang for your buck. According to “Omnivore’s Dilemma” (Pollan, 2006) it is stated that when food is abundant and cheap, people will eat more of it and get fat. I feel as though if healthier food were more affordable people in America would be healthier as a whole.
This day and age people are always on the go! Everybody is working, going to school, raising a family etc. Being that time is scarce, people find it more convenient to just grab fast food instead of choosing the healthier route. I think that people are working more than one job nowadays to simply survive, thus cutting into the time that they have to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle. According to “Omnivore’s Dilemma” (Pollan, 2006), the reason for humanity’s expanding waistline is that there is a change in our lifestyle. Over the years, we can clearly see how America has evolved from God first, family second, and work third. To work first, family second, and God third, by this shift in priorities we see it filter into our personal lives affecting us from the inside out.
