Tuesdays with Morrie

PSY 250 (Life-Span Development)

In the movie “Tuesdays with Morrie”, Morrie Schwartz is an interesting senior citizen that taught his former student Mitch Albom many things. Morrie passed on a lot of his knowledge in the last few months of his life, after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).   He talked about what is important and valuable in life. Through his dialogue with Mitch, Morrie touched Mitch and also a lot of people, including myself.

Early in the movie, I was able to identify myself to Mitch because I think that I have so much to learn and, just like him, I am always running, trying to do everything I have planned. Through this movie, I have learned a lot. Morrie’s philosophy of life is full of many ideas that can help us improve our lives.  One of the philosophies was to cherish our family and to be more open about our emotions so that we will not regret it when our loved one dies. It is so difficult to open up ourselves to anyone (especially for me). Sometimes, I feel that even confess my love to anyone or have an honest conversation about my emotions will make me vulnerable. I feel that by doing so, I open a door to the person to get to me. Now, even though it is not easy, I try to open up a little bit about my emotions.

Another one of Morrie’s philosophies is to be open to forgiveness. Most of the times, we are holding on things that are not really important and we are wasting a tremendous amount of time and energy acting like that. At the end, we might deeply regrets not forgiving, for something we should have, and not forgiving may bother us for the rest of our life. When I look back, it is true that some things we argue about a few years ago are not that important and it is time for forgiveness.

One value that Morrie felt very strongly about was that people

look at material things to judge others instead of looking on the inside...
