Social Sciences Make the Largest Impact

In the article, “ What Makes U.S. Energy Consumers Tick?” Kelly Sims Gallagher illustrates a larger picture of what exactly is being done to improve the environment. The document emphasizes the fact that we are the key to making an impact. Virtually, the article provides a much simpler approach on how to improve the state of our dying ecosystem. Ultimately, the article does a fantastic job of shedding light upon the most logical solutions to what seems like a never-ending issue. By providing relatable examples, the article successfully allows the reader to gain insight on where the United States is truly lacking in improvement for our Earth.

The first argument made by Gallagher is to support that we are lacking in simple improvements as when it is stated in the third paragraph, “Understanding and managing such obstacles is the realm of the social sciences rather than technology and engineering” (Gallagher, 1). Not only does this statement allow readers to clearly understand that it all starts with us, as humans. As a reader with no interest in conserving energy, this bold statement allowed me to understand that it is not just in the hands of technology and engineering that we will make progress. This is not only a very valid argument, but also very eye opening. After reading this several times, it became clear that we are responsible for contributing our part, in a bigger picture. This argument is just one of the many that support the main point of this article: allowing readers to understand the true components of teamwork towards a more energy efficient society starting with behavioral changes.
