Desirable features of MCQs.

A desirable multiple choice questions will be composed of the following features:

1) The items added in the multiple choice questions should differ in their degree of correctness and relevance. Some of the items may be completely incorrect while some are correct. However, there is one item that is visibly more correct than other alternatives. This item is the best answer whereas the other alternatives serves as distractors.

2) The alternatives should be listed vertically and in a rational/ logical manner.

3) The questions are clear and direct. They do not use double negatives and complex structures as they can degenerate into a test of logic.

4) There is only one unambiguously correct response to each question.

5) The distracters are plausible which may sound correct to an incompetent student yet they are completely wrong .

6) The MCQs would ask the students to slect the best sutiable answer instead of the correct answer.

7) The first few questions are relatively easier and quick to solve and help the student to calm down to focus more on the challenging items to be answered.
