Characteristics of Orientalism, Prejudice, and Discrimination

“Orientalism is a term that is normally used as an imitation or a term to depict aspects of Eastern Cultures in the West by writers, designers and artists.”(Wikipedia, July 2010)

With this I feel it means that it goes along the diversity of people and it also creates a stereotype. An example of Orientalism is what happened on 9/11, another culture came over to the United States and basically put a bad reputation towards there people from that country, so with us thinking about Arabs or Muslims we see them as all “bad” people. I don’t think this is all fair, because I am sure there are many of them that are wonderful people who were completely against what happened. When things happen and it goes against our political views we as individuals tend to take it out on the whole race.

Arabs and Muslim’s are two completely different races. Muslims are individuals who believe in Islam religion, Arabs are from the Arabian region, and are left to choose whatever religion they prefer. Muslims and Arabs are stereotyped as being the same, which is not true, but we perceive thinking that they are because of news, media, and hear say. We place stereotypes on people without knowing fully about them.

Since 9/11 the United States has aimed directly at Muslims and Arabs. FBI agents now have the ability to ask open-ended questions to possible “suspects”. They are basically able to investigate any evidence if someone comes into the U.S. and has been primed as a “threat” What the U.S. is doing is when other people come into the country as immigrants they are fingerprinted, with a back ground check, and photographed for review.

I feel for individuals to reduce prejudice and discrimination in my area and in others is to have public activities. I think by having get together would help others learn more about their fellow neighbor and help people communicate, yes not everyone is going to like that person but I think...
