ERENDIRA, ANALYSIS OF THE FILM

Erendira is a very well labored film, its basic premise, which deals with prostitution, is tastefully void of unnecessary steamy sexual content. This story revolves more around the interactions between the young girl and her grandmother, and the other characters with whom they encounter on their journey. Just like prostitution, the film also deals with other complicated topics that women encounter on a daily basis in different parts of the world.

Erendira’s “wind of her misfortune” resemblances with the problems and struggles women face everyday. This young girl does not know anything about life and learns the hard way throughout the unpleasant experiences her grandmother puts her through. Erendira’s ignorance and innocence makes her believe that her grandmother’s abusive treatment is acceptable. This dark fairy tale exposes her life to reveal all the hardships women experience, going all the way to the extreme with Erendira’s life.

In the film, there are several complications. Exploitation is one of the most important ones in this film, which is very common today. At work, or at home a lot of women are being oppressed and made ignorant to the opportunities the world has to offer. In the film, Erendira’s personality shows a weak character that is a shy, scared young girl who obeys her grandmother’s orders and puts up with her cruelty without even questioning it. The lack of care and love from her grandmother numbs Erendira through out the film but the love of Ulysses brings her some kind of happiness and hope.

It is only when Eréndira meets angelic Ulysses that her tortured life seemingly begins to change. Erendira, who is well known as a young prostitute, faces internal difficulties and struggles with corruption and lack of freedom but finally discovers her path by manipulating Ulysses and convincing him to get rid off her suppression, her grandmother.
