Personality Typing Assessment

The personality typing tool I have chosen is called The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The tool derived from the ideas and theories in the book, Psychological Types, by a Swiss physician, Carl Jung. The idea behind the assessment tool is that the personality of each individual is the culmination of four distinct traits. The results of the four independent traits, which are indicated after you’ve taken the test, determine which of the four major groups you fall under, at which point there are four subgroups under each of the major groups for a more detailed description. This tool is very popular and the test can come in many forms. Anywhere from a basic four question test where you choose a select group of characteristics that best suit you, to an 80 question survey. Some institutions even offer testing with MBTI certified professionals.

The Actual Assessment

The traits are fairly straightforward in their descriptions. To briefly go over the traits, they are as follows: Extraverted vs. introverted, sensory vs. intuitive, thinking vs. feeling, and judging vs. perceiving. Each trait on their own does not offer much insight, but certain combinations are what make it interesting. This assessment tool is not geared towards a specific purpose like career or relationship, but for a more general purpose, for everyday life use. The tool certainly does contain applications for career and relationship advice as well, but that is not the primary focus.

Assessment Accuracy

After taking the 80 question survey and calculating the results, my traits are as follows: Introverted, intuitive, feeling, and perceiving, or INFP as referenced by the text. NF is one of the major groups defined, as well as NT, SP, and SJ. As I go through and read the descriptions of the category I fall under, NF, I have to admit that it almost felt like reading a book about me.
