BARBOUR BROWN ENGINEERING LTD

INTRODUCTION

The current structure of Barbour Brown Engineering Ltd. is in progress. Improvements to the previous structure would be examined and considered in order to improve the efficiency of the management within the organisation.

Barbour Brown Engineering Ltd was a firm that focused on consulting and concentrating on civil and structural engineering projects. David Barbour and Neil Brown were the managers and the owners of the company. David and Neil operated the company from a small town office. The company comprised of a small number of staff which were headed by David and Neil (Managers), two qualified engineers, two qualified technicians and one apprentice technician. The current structure of the company was according to the hierarchy of authority with David and Neil being on the top.

John Colbert, the Manager of John Colbert Civil Engineering Company and a university friend of Neil, retired soon and had come to a discussion with Neil Brown about a merger within the two construction companies since they had worked together in numerous projects. If proposed it would be in the ambition of becoming a stronger business in the construction sector. After John joined the company the whole company had been changed.

Organisation Structure

An organisational structure consists of activities such as task allocation, coordination and supervision, which are directed towards the achievement of organizational aims. Organizational Structure is important because it focuses on particular areas. It defines control and other processes and directs communication flows. It illustrates people's roles in relation to others roles.

Under Levels of organizational structure there are levels of hierarchy. Under every level of the hierarchy there are different levels which represent a grade a rank of a staff. Organization with many levels is called Tall Organization. Organization with less number of people is called Flat Organization....
