Goodwill Industries: Mission, Vision and Values

Goodwill Industries is $4 billion nonprofit organization founded in 1902 by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister. The Goodwill philosophy of “a hand up, not a hand out” was born from Rev. Helms collecting used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of Boston; he then hired and trained those who were poor to repair the used goods. The repaired goods were either resold or given to the people who repaired them. (Goodwill, 2008)

The mission of Goodwill is to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work. The vision of Goodwill is that every person has the opportunity to achieve his/her fullest potential and participate in and contribute to all aspects of life. The five values of Goodwill are:

1. Respect: All people are treated with dignity and respect.

2. Stewardship: Honor our heritage by being socially, financially and environmentally responsible.

3. Ethics: Strive to meet the highest ethical standards

4. Learning: Challenge each other to strive for excellence and to continually learn.

5. Innovation: Embrace continuous improvement, bold creativity and change. (Goodwill, 2013)
