Assignment: Blood Disorders

There are many blood disorders some we cause our selves. And some are genetic and are caused before we are even born. Then we have environmental issues that can cause the blood disorders. It is important to know what we are dealing with and the prevention measures that will help us avoid any of the self made disorders. These are known mostly as being caused by bad nutritional habits. We are fortunate enough to be able to control this but those that are not as fortunate or that are from other countries with less available it is hard to overcome certain kinds of anemia. There are blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia that comes from both parents having the trait and passing to their children.

Amy, a four-year-old Caucasian female, has been complaining of being tired all the time. She is pale and a picky eater. Her mother is a single mom with a small budget to feed a large family. Amy only eats pasta, breads, and hot dogs, and drinks only artificial fruit punch. We are seeing her in our office to address the results of the blood tests that we ran last week. The last visit we did a physical exam and took blood work for several tests to determine the cause of the Anemia. The blood tests ran were CBC complete blood count this determines the volume, size, number and hemoglobin content of her red blood cells. Special blood tests are used to detect rare causes of anemia, such as an immune attack on red blood cells, red blood cell fragility, and defects of enzymes, hemoglobin and clotting. The other blood tests ran allowed the doctor to see the level of vitamin, iron and serum ferritin levels, the tests results that came back showed that Amy was suffering from Anemia and that the cause was her diet and the lack of eating the proper diet for a child of her age and activity level.
