Some of the positive aspects using mean are you can put the data in particular order, the value mean is descriptive, and it can show you what each value can be if they were all equal. Some of the cons are al numbers in the set must be counted for, the data can be skewed, and the calculation can be large.

The pros of median is it can find the middle of a data set, it won’t become affected by an outlier number. For cons the numbers have to be in order from least to greatest and the way you can find a median can change depending on how many numbers you have in the group. Like mean, median can be used as a descriptive tool, however finding medians value is more labor intensive than coming up with a mean.

An example of where mean would be better than median would be finding the average salary of a department within a company. (http://www.payscale.com/compensation-today/2011/11/mean-vs-median) The same source also looks at the median.

Left skew can also be called negative skew has a long tail on the negative side of the peak. The mean will also be on the left side of the peak. A right skew is known as a positive skew has a tail on the positive side of the peak. The mean is on the right side of the peak value. http://www.math.fsu.edu/~wooland/hm/Unit2Module10/Unit2Module10.html
