AIU Online University

Abstract

Throughout the years art has had many different definitions. Every so many year’s people change what the meaning of art is. Almost every time though they always included skill.

Art

In the 11-12th century the definition of art was “Skill at doing anything as a result of knowledge and practice…..” (Jirousek, 1995). In the 18th century the meaning of art had changed. "A pursuit or occupation in which skill is directed toward the ratification of taste or production of what is beautiful." (Jirousek, 1995). Art does not entail only drawing, sketching, painting, singing, sculpting or getting engaged in any creative activity.” (micadeolu, 2011).

Painting

An example of a painting is Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. (Van Gogh Gallery, 2002-2012).

Sculpture

An example of a sculpture is Michelangelo's David. (Michelangelo's David).

The sculpture of David is supposed to be before his battle with Goliath. He is mentally more than physically tense. He is trying to prepare himself for battle without psyching himself self out at the same time. The detail in this sculpture is why this is art. The lines in his skin and face and feet are just amazingly good.

Architecture

An example of architecture is the Eiffel Tower. (Famous Buildings and Structures, 2005).

The Eiffel tower was built in 1889 by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. People from all over the world go to Paris to see the Eiffel tower and some compare it to a boat or a fish and...
