ABSTRACT This gave students an introduction to data acquisition and use of LabView software. The lab consisted of the use an accelerometer and a microphone to record the casing acceleration and sound pressure from an electric shaver. The data is digitally processed and analyzed to understand the relation between casing acceleration and sound pressure. In this experiment the data is also processed to distinguish between signal and noise. The analysis proved that casing acceleration and sound pressure are directly related. 1. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE “A battery operated shaver works on the phenomenon of oscillation” [1]. In the shaver an electric shaft drives the head to oscillate and produce a shaving action. During this process it also vigorous vibrations and creates a loud annoying sound. Along with vibrations and sound the shaver generates moderate stress, electromagnetic radiation and heat. The electric charge produced during its action is proportional to the acceleration of the shaver. To measure the vibrations in the system an accelerometer is used and the sound created by the shaver is measured using a microphone [1]. DAQ module is utilized to receive the signals from the accelerometer and LABVIEW is used to interpret the signals received. All the waveform generated during the experiment show oscillatory motion. To explain oscillation it is very important to understand the concept of a period of oscillation. Period is defined as the time taken by a wave cycle to repeat itself and can be calculated using its frequency seen below in Equation (1)...
