It is said that the only permanent thing in this world is change.

Nothing ever stays the same. Somehow, the different forces that govern the universe as we know it make sure of that. Over time, things change, and it matters not if the change is small or significant; the very instant change occurs, there’s no turning back. One can argue that you can reverse a change, but can one really bring back the exact state of anything in its totality once it has been altered?

What is very notable about change is that its impact upon everything that used to be, is currently, and will be in existence is highly significant. The changes that occurred yesterday directly impacts what exists today, and what changes occurred today will affect that happens tomorrow. The same applies on a much grander scale! The changes of billions of years ago are what caused the current state of things today, and what changes that occur from today up to a billion years in the future will influence the state of things during that time.

The changes need not be significant, either. A rock that is constantly hit by tiny drops of water will eventually break due to weathering. Tectonic plates that move a few centimeters towards a certain direction every few years will eventually be far from its original place after billions of years. Species that adapt to their environment will eventually bring forth new kinds of species that evolved from the original.

That is what the film Wild Europe has very beautifully pointed out. The documentary showed how the changes that occurred in the Earth billions of years in the past caused the very state of Europe’s being in the present day. It explained things such why certain rock formations are formed the way they are or why certain elements are found in very unlikely places (such as seashells found far from shores). It also explained what scientists believed to be the timeline of changes that occurred in the Earth, most specifically to Europe.
