As today’s society becomes more global with each passing day, all aspects of our life are being touched. From the goods we purchase and the services we needed, more and more often these are being imported from across the United Stated and even from around the globe. Rarely are the foods we consume locally grown. Most people are reliant on their local grocery stores which stocks store and brand name items that are purchased for the lowest possible price. What is thought of as a simple meal of pizza, chicken wings, bread, salad and delicious apple pie for dessert has to go a long way before it makes its way to the dinner table.

The meal identified above would primarily require cheese, flour, flour, chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and apples. Visiting the local grocery store you will find most of these items are not locally grown. Browsing the produce section you will see they come from states on the opposite side of the United States as well as foreign countries. A prime example is pre-peeled garlic, a staple in any tomato sauce. While it is convenient to not have to peel the garlic, the pre-peeled variety comes all the way from China! The same applies to the lettuce, tomatoes and flour needed to create this meal.

Chicken can come from a variety of sources. Chicken farms are abundant throughout the United States. If you were to ask the butcher at the local supermarket they might not know off hand exactly where the chicken came from. Chickens raised in Texas are given larger quantities of sodium than chickens raised in Delaware so that they may retain additional water in the dry, Texas heat ("Where does your," 2011). The over 9 billion chickens we eat are mass produced to meet our growing food needs.
