Five Things I learned in Chapter 4

First I learned how to analyze the audience for communication when faced with a writing task. It is better to carefully analyze the audience before writing. This audience analysis usually consists of people with similar level of expertise, background, knowledge, and the like. The audience is typically homogeneous. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the message audience analysis should be perform to identify the interest, needs, and personality of the receiver.

Second I learned that plan the purpose, content, and organization of the message determine what information to include and in what order. Most writers find it easier to start with general purpose and refine it into a specific one. A clearly stated purpose helps avoid including irrelevant and distracting information. The useful strategy that might be helpful in constructing the message is brainstorming . Another possible strategy is mind mapping, a process that avoids the step-by-step limitations of lists. Organization is the final step in the planning process to establish the message – to determine in what order to discuss each topic.

Third I learned that to compose the first draft of the message is by letting go the ideas that flow as quickly as possible onto paper or computer screen without worrying about the style, correctness or format. Separate the drafting stage from the revising stage. Record the narrative form all the points you identified in the planning stage. When finished, begin revising. Some people experiencing writer’s block –the inability to focus on the writing process and to draft a message. Procrastination, impatience and perfectionism are typical causes of writer’s block.

Fourth I learned that revise for content ensure that all needed information is included and only needed information is included. Then revise the style, ensuring that all manner of ideas present is effective....
