Extemporaneous Essay 1

In Stephen Marche’s article “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?,” Marche describes the different aspects of how social networking could possibly have a tie to the feeling of loneliness. He starts off by telling us about an actress who was found dead, due to a heart condition, days after she died. The significance of this is that her computer was on when she died. The question here is, are we that connected to social networking that we would use it up to the last minutes of our lives? We are very isolated as a society and Facebook along with other social networking sites play a big role in this state of isolation. We are so attached to social networking sites that this could be a lead cause to the feeling of loneliness in today’s society. In this essay I will explain how the feeling of loneliness could possibly have to do with how connected we are to our social networking “lives”. I will do this by using examples provided in the article.

Social networking can make us lonely just by taking a look at what our “friends” are posting. If they are posting all the luxuries of their life and we just sit there and read about it, this could make bring about a feeling of happiness or sadness depending on how we look at it. We could see this as a form of motivation or as something to make us feel less about ourselves. According to Marche’s article, a vast amount of people between the ages of 18 and 34 utilize social networking sites such as Facebook.

Sites such as Facebook make us lonely because we spend more time concentrating on our “friends” on Facebook than our real friends in real life. In this way we become more drawn to Facebook and lose contact with the outside world. This leads us to the state of isolation.
