Personal Responsibility

Everyone knows someone who acts as if everyone else is out to get him or nothing is his own fault. This is usually describing someone who lacks personal responsibility. Personal responsibility is the act of taking ownership for your own actions or decisions. Every day people make decisions that not only affect them but also affect everyone around them, and It is how you respond to the consequences of your actions that determines how personally responsible you are. “Many people think of making a choice and personal responsibility as doing something active. However, that is only half of it. The choices we make to not act carry just as much weight and are just as important as when we choose to act.” (“Personal responsibility”, 2011)

To Act or not To Act

When you see something wrong or out of place, do you fix it or do you walk by and act as if you did not see anything? Whether it is something as small as picking up a piece of paper off the ground or as big as reminding your boss of the customs and courtesies of the country you are in, it is important to do the right thing no matter what. Getting in that kind of habit could save your dignity and maybe even your job someday. Choosing not to act could cost you your credibility with coworkers and peers, friends and family, or supervisors and subordinates (“Personal Responsibility”, 2011).

Taking Ownership

Society needs to step up and take ownership of their actions and decisions. Every day in this country people are blaming others for their lack of responsibility. People want to sue McDonald’s for making them fat, or blame the stove when their child touches the hot eye. Taking ownership of our actions seems to be a thing of the past these days, instead of blaming everyone else for your carelessness or lack of self-control, stand up and be a responsible person, admit when you are wrong and...
