Interactive Reading

Interactive reading involves an input or action on the part of the reader; we can come to the conclusion that interactive reading requires some action or involvement on the part of the reader. In other words interactive reading encourages the reader to do more than just read the text. Interactive reading helps the reader most importantly to comprehend what they are reading. Without comprehension of what you are reading the text remains just plain letters without any meaning. According to our textbooks there are various tactics that one could utilize to be interactive with the text namely: “use your imagination, use your body and use a familiar process” (Dole & Tagart, 2012). When one uses their imagination whilst reading you would place yourself in the text, imagine you are one of characters, try to feel what they are feeling, see, touch smell etc. For me personally when I read, I imagine the story in my head/mind almost like a movie playing in front of me, I imagine the characters with faces, their expressions, clothing, and as the words enter my brain I try and make mental images of what I am reading. To me this is interactive reading; making yourself part of the text. When one uses your body to interact with text it is basically when you have a pen or pencil in your hand, and you actively mark the important parts while you are reading. I have found in my own personal experience that this is a tactic that really works great, normally when I study, I would have a highlighter with me highlighting the important parts of the text, while underlining phrases that I do not understand and have to come back to. This also helps me a lot to keep focused on what I am reading in order not for my mind to wander of.
