The Four Steps to Visualizing Strategy

The four steps to visualizing strategy are 1.) Visual Awakening, 2.) Visual Exploration, 3.) Visual Strategy Fair, and 4.) Visual Communication.

Visual Awakening

The visual awakening is the period in which a company realizes the need for a change. Imagine cruising along in the business world, oblivious to the fact that a number of companies are passing you by and beginning to command a share of the market that used to belong to your company. For Dell, this was never the case. Michael Dell’s visual awakening came at the age of 19. As a freshman in college, he decided to put his dreams of outperforming IBM by putting up the initial $1000 to incorporate his business. In 2008, Dell recorded record gross profits to the tune of over 11 billion dollars. Only a profound visual awakening can lead a person to begin at a $0 profit level to $11 billion, in a relatively short period of time.

Visual Exploration

The visual exploration is the period in which a company researches how consumers do and do not use their products. This is when it becomes evident to a company what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. For Michael Dell, exploring customers wants and needs as well as likes and dislikes of current products was not difficult at all. His business, after all, started in his dorm room in college by selling pc upgrades and add-ons. Having this information helped Dell to immediately streamline his pc construction from day one.

Visual Strategy Fair

The visual strategy fair is the period in which a company presents the culmination of their visual findings to people with like business positions, often within an organization. This is a period of evaluation of the basic meanings of the results of the data found. This is where the future implementation of the strategy becomes more evident and is nearly ready to be put into use. For Michael Dell, this was not so easy of a task to perform.
