Week 4 Response

Prejudice is prejudging people and groups on the basis of images that you or society has led to believe. The most interesting part of the story was “prejudice is being down on something you’re not up on.” Due to stereotypes people don’t have a chance to show who they really are because they aren’t really given a fair chance. Before reading this story I knew there were ignorant people in the world where if you’re not living life as they see fit, then you’re not living it properly. Growing up as a Muslim in America, I personally never had problems with anyone in regards to religion, unfortunately I have witnessed it. One day in fabric design class there was a girl in the back row who always made snotty comments about everyone and everything (personally I think it was her hormones acting up). One day we got a new student in the class who happened to be Muslim and also wore a hijab on her head. Randomly, out of nowhere the girl in the back goes to her “why are you wearing a rag on your head?” The girl did not say anything. However, me on the other hand I was completely infuriated. I never felt so disrespected in my life. People say sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me. Yeah right, words do hurt. She can thank whatever god she believes in for being pregnant during that semester or else. I don’t condone violence, but unfortunately she brought out the worst in me that day. When I read how after prayer at the mosque all the tires were slashed by people who pretty much hated Muslims, my heart broke. Just because you are Muslim does not mean you are a terrorist which is the number one association that comes with it. Just because Saddam Hussain was does not mean that every other Muslim is as well. Also, just because you are Hindu doesn’t mean that you deserve to be beaten to death, assaulted or not have chance to set up a temple in your hometown because of people not agreeing with your religion.
