Operating System Analysis

The operating systems that an organization uses, whether for their offices, warehouses or plants, are a very important asset that many people do not realize. The operating systems are responsible for functions such as managing machine resources (processors, input/output devices, etc.), providing a user interface (APIs, Windows Desktop, Control Panels, etc.), and running applications for their computers (hyper-threading, memory allocation, etc.). These various roles play a very large part as to what the overall scope or purpose of the operating system will be. Three operating systems in particular that are used in many different organizations are Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Servers Version 6. Our team has researched and evaluated the various roles that these three operating systems play towards machine efficiency. They do have many of the same functions in common, but they are all very different in nature as a whole. Most companies use a variety of operating systems for all their computers because every department has different requirements of their machines; this paper will discuss and elaborate on each of the above mentioned operating systems by comparing and contrasting their numerous different features.

Windows 7

As previously mentioned, an operating system’s main functions are to manage resources, provide a user interface, and run applications. First and foremost, it is important to evaluate how each of the operating systems that we discuss completes each of these functions. An operating system as resource manager is one of the more basic (though very important) utilities to consider. Windows 7’s user interface gets a lot of attention because of how great of an operating system interface it is.
