History of Fifa World Cup

- originated by Jules Rimet, a French lawyer and businessman who

was also passionate about football.

- He was on the FIFA Board during the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924, and when he

watched Uruguay win, and was inspired to create the idea of a worldwide football-

only competition.

1928 - He proposed the idea of the World Cup and accepted by the FIFA members in

Amsterdam. Later, after a special FIFA congress in Barcelona, the Uruguay was

selected to host the first World Cup.

1930 - Uruguay celebrated both its centenary year of independence, and its first World

Cup event.
