The Advertising Kingdom

Disney Corporation has been accused of targeting innocent children with their advertising and of marketing products though their movies. However, Disney’s critics fail to take into account that other corporations market their products to children. The critics also fail to address the responsibilities of the parent.

When we think of Disney, we think of the fun and fantasy. We get pleasure out of watching a Disney move or visiting a theme park. We must all agree that the inner child comes out in all of us, through Disney. However, there are critics that have a different view on the Disney Corporation. Jack Zipes criticized Walt Disney for commoditizing fairy tales to sell his own trademark (Zipes, 335). Nevertheless, he fails to mention that fairy tales were never intended for children. In fact, fairy tales are very adult in content. However, Disney was an entrepreneur who created age-appropriate versions of fairy tales through film. Thus, doing this Disney actually returns the fairy tale to majority of people (Zipes, 334). Regardless, of what the critics think, in any type of business, you need to advertise your products in order to compete with others. This is just good business practice. As an entrepreneur, Disney did just that with the use technology to market his products.

Disney is not the only corporation that advertises towards children. Have we forgotten about a man by the name of Jim Henson, and a show he created called Sesame Street? Sesame Street has been around for over 40 years and has been seen worldwide. They have a collection of products from movies, apparel, books, and toys. Their audiences are children between the ages 2-8 years old. Along the same lines Sesame Street, like Disney do have a trademark and advertises their products through the media.
