Why World Peace is an Unattainable Notion

“When our young men grow angry at some real or imaginary wrong, and disfigure their faces with black paint, their hearts, also, are disfigured and turn black, and then their cruelty is relentless and knows no bounds, and our old men are not able to restrain them.” Chief Seattle’s words indicate that when people gear up for war, they become ruthless and unrelenting and cannot be restrained in their determination to fight for what they believe in. I believe that world peace is an unattainable notion because of human nature which encompasses differences among one another, a thirst for power, and greediness.

What makes humans so unique is the fact that each and every one of us are different and comprised of a diverse variety of personality traits, morals, values, and beliefs. These differences set us apart, and mean that we may not always agree and be able to get along with one another. People disagree with neighbors and families making it hard to coexist with one another. It makes sense that having disagreements and conflicts within small groups and settings would be carry out into larger groups with bigger and more complex disagreements. Religion plays a big role in the separation of people who have a difference in opinion and beliefs. Some people challenge and counter the beliefs of others and this causes conflict because these beliefs are very strong and deeply rooted in way of life. Also, in cultures across the globe, way of life can be very diverse and foreign. Many people are unable to relate to and accept the way of life that is practiced in other cultures because it is too different from their beliefs and what they’re accustomed to. With so many different individuals and various different religious groups and cultures, the world is full of disagreement, resistance, and conflict.
