Introduction

A computer network, or simply a network, is a collection of computers and other hardware interconnected by communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information. Using networks offers advantages relative to using a stand-alone computer—that is, a computer that is not connected to other computers and that uses software applications and data stored on its local disks. Most importantly, networks enable multiple users to share devices (for example, printers) and data (such as spread sheet files), which are collectively known as the network’s resources. Sharing devices saves money.

Question 1

1.1.1. There are several types of wireless standards in use today. The majority of it is based on the IEEE 802.11 series of standards.

* The IEEE 802.11b standard has been given credit for the explosion of wireless networking. The equipment available is cheap and getting cheaper which provide for decent network access speeds. 802.11b has a maximum raw data rate of 11Mbps of available throughput. It uses unregulated radio signaling frequency of 2.4GHz and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) for data encoding. It has a maximum range of 300ft (91m) indoors and about 1500ft (457m) outdoors.

* The IEEE 802.11n standard is designed to improve on the 802.11g standard in the amount of bandwidth supported by utilizing multiple wireless signals and antennas (called MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology) instead of one. This standard operates on both the 2.4GHz and the lesser used 5GHz frequency band. Support for 5GHz is optional. It operates at a maximum net data rate from 54Mbps to 600Mbps. This standard has more resistant to signal interference from outside sources. This standard has a higher range due to the stronger signaling it provides.
