For each document, explain the main idea; list by document name and then main idea:

1. Emancipation- The main idea shows the difference between before and after slavery.  

2. Compromise with the South: The main idea of this cartoon is showing how the north and the south compromise the war is useless and it wouldn't make sense.  Lady Liberty is grieving a soldier she represents America.

3. Pardon/Franchise: Lady Liberty is embracing a union soldier while confederates are begging to be let back into the union. She does not know what to do because the soldier risked his life for the fight and how would it be fair to him if she let the confederates back in if he doesn't even have the same rights as them.

4. Ignorant Vote: The cartoon is basically saying northern white immigrants are just as ignorant as blacks and allowing both to vote is equally stupid.

1. Emancipation- The picture on the left show how brutally the slaves were treated: beat, whipped, and sold.  The right side shows the free slaves, but still life is not great.  Conditions are still poor and life is rough.  In the middle of the cartoon shows ideal life, where the family is free but also has a warm home, fully clothed, and a meal.   

2. Compromise with the South: The picture shows both sides shaking hands and compromising . The North's flag is upside down and the south side is still perfectly flying in the air.  Lady Liberty is grieving the death of...
