Step 1

List the goals and outcomes for your performance management system. Determine whether your company needs a performance management system focused on preparing workers for food service industry careers or a system that rewards fast food restaurant employees for meeting the company's service standards and productivity measures.

Review job descriptions and draft performance standards for each job, based on the employee's duties and responsibilities. For example, assume the fast food restaurant manager must maintain 85 percent customer satisfaction. This means of all the customers polled on their dining experience, complaints come from just 15 percent of customers. Another performance standard example involves the time it takes restaurant employees to serve each customer. If the ideal time is two minutes per customer, yet employees routinely take much longer -- three minutes or more -- to serve each customer, employees who take longer to serve customers aren’t meeting the restaurant’s performance standards.

Step 3

Develop the actual performance evaluation documents. Many performance evaluation systems for fast food restaurants consist of supervisory informal feedback forms, employee commendation forms, customer feedback forms and an annual performance evaluation document. Informal feedback from supervisors can be in writing or verbal, as long as the supervisor commits to providing continuous and regular feedback and guidance to employees. Employees who want to recognize their peers use commendation forms. Print customer feedback forms on the back of receipts for easy access to a computer-based survey about the customer’s experience. The annual performance evaluation is the culmination of feedback during an entire evaluation period.

Step 4
